Vortex 2019b has been released!

The second release of 2019 is now available. Significant features and enhancements have been added.

  • Installation and update of Vortex Studio versions across several computers of a simulator is now done in one operation. All the necessary packages are downloaded and installed automatically. 
  • The licensing process is also improved, either for local or server based licenses. Activating multiple licenses for simulator computers not connected to the internet is done through a simple process, directly from the Vortex License Manager application.



Modular vehicle systems are now available as part of the Vortex Content package. These templates of prebuilt components allow you to tune and test chassis, engines, transmission, differential and wheels more easily by using only important parameters exposed through a VHL interface. Custom template creation is also more easily done with the prebuilt vehicles also included with Vortex Studio: hatchback, sedan, truck and trailers, etc...



 A new Deformable Terrain can now be used on terrains and is an important element in achieving simulation's realism. It allows the deformation of the surface using digging tools (bucket, blade). Vehicles' wheels also interact with this terrain to deform it on every pass, creating ruts and graphical marks modeled on a specific texture.Simulation performances have been optimized and are generally better than the Earthwork Zone tool.



Better depth perception can now easily be achieved with the addition of an advanced parallax mapping feature. Materials can have a pronounced depth 'look' while still being a 2D element. A Self Shadowing option is also available for materials with a height map. These two features require much less processing power than what an equivalent 3D element would require to achieve the same visual result.



Vortex Studio Editor

There have been several changes and improvements in the creation tool of Vortex Studio:

  1. Assemblies can now contain additional logic extensions: Scripts, Connection and VHL interfaces. This allows mechanisms to be designed with a more modular structure, with a single containing dynamics objects along the logic to control them. 
  2. An Assembly can now contain sub-assemblies, thus allowing for more flexibility in designing mechanisms and splitting tasks between teams of simulation engineers. This is especially powerful when used with the new logic extensions in the assemblies to manage complex machines (vehicles, cranes, excavators) with complex sub-systems and interchangeable components. 
  3. The position and orientation of the default camera (also known as 'Perspective') can be saved in any scene, mechanism, assembly or part document. Please refer to the Initial view topic of the Vortex Studio Editor documentation. 
  4. The drag-and-drop functionalities have been extended in the VHL interface. Additionally,  VHL interface can now generate constant values for output fields of common Vortex types during simulation: Boolean, integer, vectors, and even Windows file name without the need to establish a connection. This feature can easily replace an equivalent Python script and is therefore more efficient in terms of performance. 



Vortex Remote Debugger, a new application in Vortex Studio:  The Vortex Remote Debugger allows the dynamic monitoring of mechanisms in a Vortex simulation running anywhere on a network, without interfering with it. This application is similar to the Vortex Player but does not require to be part of a distributed simulator. The 2019b version supports the dynamics display of collision geometries, inertia, center of mass, part origin and contacts between objects.



  • Vortex Studio Academic now include all Vortex Studio features: cables, earthwork, vehicle systems, ocean simulation and many more can now be used in the Vortex Editor.



  • Altair Partner Alliance: Vortex Studio Create is now offered as part of the Altair Partner Alliance, a portal giving you access to the Vortex Editor and Player applications by using Altair HyperWorks Units. Please consult the Altair website for more details ( Altair Partner Alliance )



  • Vortex Studio Activate and Engage can now incorporate a broad range of controller devices to enhance your Vortex simulator. These controllers use the CAN Open protocol and are close replica of manufacturer control devices. They can be configured in Vortex Studio Editor and used on any node of a Vortex simulator. Please consult your CM Labs account manager for the complete catalog of available devices.
